More info about WOFs

In New Zealand, all vehicles must undergo a regular WOF inspection to ensure that they are safe and roadworthy. A WOF is a comprehensive inspection that is conducted by a qualified inspector to check that a vehicle meets the minimum safety standards set by the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA).

It is important to note that the WOF inspection is not a substitute for regular maintenance and servicing, and drivers should still ensure that their vehicles are well-maintained and in good condition between inspections.

During a WOF inspection, Auto Super Shoppes qualified inspectors will check a range of components on the vehicle, including the brakes, steering, suspension, lights, tyres, and seatbelts. They will also check for any signs of rust, corrosion, or other structural damage that could compromise the safety of the vehicle.

If the vehicle passes the WOF inspection, it will be issued with a warrant of fitness certificate, which is valid for either six or twelve months depending on the age of the vehicle. If your vehicle fails the inspection, you will be given a list of necessary repairs or replacements along with a competitive estimate for repairs that must be made before a new warrant of fitness can be issued.

Frequently Asked Questions about WOF

What is a WOF and why do I need one?

A Warrant of Fitness (WOF) is a mandatory safety inspection required by New Zealand law to ensure your vehicle meets minimum safety standards. It verifies that critical systems like brakes, steering, and tyres are in proper working condition. Driving without a current WOF is illegal and may invalidate your insurance. Regular inspections help identify safety issues before they cause accidents or expensive breakdowns.

How often does my vehicle need a WOF?

Vehicles less than three years old require a WOF every 12 months, while vehicles over three years old need inspection every 6 months. The expiry date is displayed on your windscreen certificate. You can have your WOF inspection completed up to one month before the expiry date without losing time on your certification period. Different rules apply for heavy vehicles, which require a Certificate of Fitness (COF) instead.

What happens if my vehicle fails its WOF?

If we identify safety issues during your vehicle inspection, you'll receive a detailed report identifying all areas requiring attention. Our inspectors will explain these clearly and provide repair options with competitive quotes. If your current WOF has expired, the vehicle can only legally be driven to a repair facility or pre-booked inspection. At Auto Super Shoppes, we offer the convenience of on-site repairs followed by re-inspection, often allowing same-day certification.

How much does a WOF inspection cost?

WOF inspection prices are competitive across our nationwide network, with standard fees for most passenger vehicles. The exact cost may vary slightly between locations, but we always provide transparent pricing without hidden charges. Many Auto Super Shoppes offer promotional WOF pricing or discounts when combined with servicing. Contact your local workshop for current pricing or check our website for special offers.

Can I get WOF repairs done at the same location?

Yes, all Auto Super Shoppes offering WOF inspections are fully-equipped workshops capable of completing necessary repairs on-site. This eliminates the hassle of traveling between testing and repair facilities. Our qualified technicians can address most WOF failure items immediately, from lighting and wiper replacements to more complex brake or suspension repairs. After completion, our inspectors can perform immediate re-inspection to issue your new WOF certificate.
